Siliguri: The longstanding demand for identity cards for artists was once again raised during the ongoing handicraft fair in Siliguri.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by artisans due to the lack of proper identification, Bengal minister for Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Textiles, Chandranath Sinha assured of taking necessary measures to address the issue promptly.

This year, a stall has been set up at the fair where artists can apply for their identity cards. Other services, including access to credit cards, will also be available at the stall.

“Our government stands firmly by the side of artists. All necessary arrangements will be made to provide them with identity cards without delay. This time, a special stall has been set up where artists can apply for identity cards. Other services, including access to credit cards, will also be available,” said the minister.

The largest handicraft fair in North Bengal, currently being held at Biswa Bangla Shilpi Haat in Kawakhali, Siliguri, features the exquisite work of around 650 artists from across the state.

The fair was inaugurated on December 11 by Chandranath Sinha, alongside Rajesh Pandey, Principal Secretary of the MSME and Textiles department, and Gautam Deb, Mayor of Siliguri. The event, which will run until January 5, is open to the public free-of-charge.

This annual winter event brings together artisans showcasing a diverse range of crafts, including woodwork, bamboo art, jute and cane products, paper crafts, glassware, yarn items, clay creations and metalwork.

Last year, the fair achieved sales worth Rs 11 crore, with additional orders amounting to several crores. This year, the government aims to surpass that milestone while providing enhanced support to the artists. “Artworks are now being sold through various government departments, and thousands of people can visit this fair to buy directly from artisans. Furthermore, artists can now display and sell their creations online,” Sinha added.
