Kolkata: Three patients were airlifted at the helipad at Sagar Island and brought for treatment at MR Bangur Hospital in Kolkata for better treatment.

Thakur Das (70), a resident of Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh, was the first to be airlifted. He was admitted at the temporary hospital at Gangasagar Mela ground after suffering a stroke on January 10. He was referred to MR Bangur Hospital on Sunday when it was presumed that the septuagenarian needed better treatment infrastructure.

The second patient to be airlifted a few hours later was Maharani Mondal (85), of Uttar Taldighi village under Canning Police Station area of South 24-Parganas district. She was diagnosed with sepsis, acute kidney failure, anaemia and left ventricular hypertrophy in case of hypertension. She was given primary treatment at a local hospital but needed better healthcare facilities because of her complications. She was admitted on Saturday morning after she suddenly fell ill.

Later in the day, 20-year-old Rajkumar Pande of village Bastik under Sandh Gobindanagar district in Uttar Pradesh was airlifted after being diagnosed with severe anaemia. He has been admitted at Calcutta Medical College Hospital. The airlifting operations were held under supervision of district magistrate Sumit Gupta and other senior officials of the district administration. A team of West Bengal Radio Club — ham radio enthusiasts — who have already camped at Gangasagar took active part in providing assistance for airlifting.
