Road safety: Flyover or underpass proposed at Tungidighi in Raiganj
Raiganj: The Chowrasta More area at Tungidighi in North Dinajpur’s Karandighi block has been marked as an accident-prone zone by district officials, who have proposed constructing a flyover or underpass to enhance road safety. The project aims to address the high incidence of accidents in the area, which sees significant traffic from Bihar via the Tungidighi-Barsoi Road through Balrampur.
District Magistrate Surendra Kumar Meena and MLA Gautam Paul visited the site recently to assess the situation and discuss plans for construction.
The project, funded by the Public Works Department (PWD), is expected to span the North-South axis of Chowrasta More.
In a meeting with the Tungidighi Traders Association, officials acknowledged that the construction will necessitate the relocation of numerous businesses and residential structures along the proposed route. Nilkamal Kundu, Secretary of the Tungidighi Traders Association, shared that the association plans to discuss the implications for affected traders with MLA Gautam Paul before engaging in further talks with the district administration.
Gautam Paul , MLA Karandighi, said: “With many vehicles entering from Bihar daily for business purposes, this stretch has become increasingly prone to accidents. A flyover or underpass is crucial to prevent further accidents. It will require the removal of a significant number of shops and homes. A final decision on the project is expected following a meeting between officials and traders on Monday, where the terms of construction will be discussed.”
