Professor nominated as Panchayat Samiti president

Cooch Behar: From the role of a professor to assuming the position of president of the Panchayat Samiti, 40-year-old professor Sablu Barman of the department of Bengali at Panchanan Barma University in Cooch Behar has undergone a significant transformation.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has nominated him as the president of Mathabhanga No II Block Panchayat Samiti, believing that his academic background will contribute to the progress of the area.
This decision reflects professor Barman’s longstanding association with the TMC, where he has fulfilled various responsibilities.
Notably, in 2018, he contested and emerged triumphant as the party candidate for Nishiganj II Panchayat
member, serving in that capacity for five years.
In the Mathabhanga II Panchayat Samiti, which encompasses 30 seats, the Trinamool secured 17 seats while the BJP won 13 seats during the Panchayat elections. Consequently, control of the Panchayat Samiti rested with the Trinamool.
An election was conducted to appoint the president of the Samiti, resulting in Sablu Barman, the Trinamool’s successful candidate from Nishiganj, being elected as the president. Deepti Roy Tarafdar, the former president of the Panchayat Samiti, has been elected as the vice-president.
Sablu Barman said: “Educated and socially aware individuals can genuinely contribute positively to politics. People hold such expectations. This is what has motivated my entry into politics. Education, when combined with political involvement, nurtures societal and cultural growth.”
He said that his primary objective is implementing all the welfare and social schemes initiated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the masses.
