Prabhat Patni elected Mekhliganj Municipality’s new Chairman

Cooch Behar: Prabhat Patni has been elected as the new chairman of Mekhliganj Municipality following a councillor vote on Tuesday. The election was held in the presence of municipal officials, after which Patni, councillor of Ward 7, took the oath of office.
After taking the oath, Patni assured that development would be his top priority. He stated: “The immediate task will be to complete the stalled development projects. Additionally, I will engage with the administration to address the traffic issues in the area. We will also ensure that all services under the municipality’s jurisdiction reach the people efficiently.” Currently, Mekhliganj Municipality, which has a total of nine seats, is governed by the Trinamool Congress. However, a faction of councillors had expressed dissatisfaction with the former chairman, Keshab Das. Several months ago, these councillors filed a complaint with the District Trinamool President, which led to a motion being brought against Das last Friday. Seven councillors voted in favour of the motion, resulting in the removal of Keshab Das.
Following this, the process of electing a new chairman was initiated. On Tuesday, all councillors, except the former chairman, were present for the election. Prabhat Patni’s name was proposed, and the seven councillors who had previously voted against Das supported his candidacy. Patni was declared the new chairman and subsequently sworn in.
