Kolkata: At least 209 villagers from Kharagpur in West Midnapore received land patta following the assurance of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Banerjee had visited Matkatpur village barely 13 days ago. While interacting with the local people, he learnt that some poor villagers have not yet received land pattas and gave necessary directions in this regard.

The aggrieved villagers were residing on land belonging to the state Irrigation department but didn’t possess the land patta. They had complained to Banerjee that their repeated request made to the local administration regarding land patta had been an exercise in futility.

They had been living on this land for several generations. On February 4, Banerjee on his way to attend a public meeting at Keshpur had sneaked into the Matkatpur village in Kharagpur and interacted with the villagers. They complained to him about the non-receipt of the land patta.

Banerjee who is also the party MP from Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency called up state Irrigation minister Partha Bhowmick from the spot and requested him to consider handing over the land patta to these villagers with top priority. The land pattas were handed over from the BDO office located under Kharagpur rural police station to 209 villagers.
