Police seizes cab that ferried JU student to hosp on incident night
Kolkata: The police, on Thursday, seized the taxi which ferried the deceased student of Jadavpur University (JU) to the hospital on the night of the incident (August 9) while questioning the Dean of Students, Rajat Ray who reportedly has admitted the lapses on the part of university authorities.
According to sources, while checking the CCTV footage of the road outside JU the police spotted the taxi and traced the owner from the registration number of the vehicle. Later, police summoned the driver on Thursday at the Jadavpur PS.
The taxi will be sent for forensic examination.
The taxi driver claimed that on August 9 night, a group of youths told him to drive to a hospital as they carried the victim inside the taxi. The injured youth’s head was covered with a piece of cloth, as learnt from the testimony of the driver who also mentioned that he spotted injuries on the face. He drove them to a private hospital in Jadavpur and left after collecting his fare.
Meanwhile, the Dean of Students, Ray was again asked to appear before the Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Shankha Shubhra Chakrabarty on Thursday. Earlier, he was summoned on Wednesday but he did not appear. On Thursday, he reached Lalbazar around 3:15 pm. He was interrogated for almost three hours.
The students, who were arrested till Wednesday, are now being interrogated by the police who are trying to find out their role on the night of the incident. Police are also trying to find out who else was present in the hostel that night but fled before morning.
This apart, on Thursday evening a clash broke out between a Leftist student wing and ABVP in front of the JU gate number 4. It is alleged that the members of the left students’ wing showed black flags to the BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari who was giving a speech in a meeting. Police have detained a few persons from the spot.
