Over Rs 18L seized in poll surveillance across Kolkata
Kolkata: More than Rs 18 lakh in unaccounted cash and foreign currency were seized in multiple election surveillance operations across Kolkata, while one person was arrested with an illegal firearm in South 24-Parganas, officials said on Saturday.
The Flying Surveillance Team (FST) of the Election Commission, along with
Kolkata Police, intercepted an App-based cab near Nature Park at the Santoshpur Road–Taratala Road crossing under Garden Reach police station and recovered Rs 4,10,000 from a passenger. The man, a businessman from Jharkhand, failed to produce documents supporting the source of the cash.
In another operation on Friday evening, a joint team of the Static Surveillance
Team (SST) and FST intercepted a vehicle under Park Street police station limits and recovered Rs 6,96,485 along with foreign currency, including 427 US dollars, 25 dirhams and 1 riyal.
Earlier on Saturday, a joint team of FST, police and Central Armed Police Forces intercepted a vehicle under South Port police station and recovered Rs 2,18,000.
At an SST checkpoint near Joka Tram Depot, five persons travelling in a vehicle were intercepted, and a brown-coloured bag containing Rs 5,00,000 in cash was recovered.
Meanwhile, in South 24 Parganas, police arrested a 38-year-old man from Uttar Kashipur after recovering an improvised country-made firearm from his residence during a raid.
