No services on East-West Metro’s under-river section today

Kolkata: In line with prior announcements, the Kolkata Metro Railway authorities have confirmed that there will be no services on the East-West Metro’s under-river section on Sunday, January 19, due to essential testing of the Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system.
The testing follows a similar closure on last Sunday, January 12, when services between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade were suspended for the same purpose. Passengers on the Salt Lake Sector V-Sealdah stretch of the Green Line, which regularly remains closed on Sundays, are not expected to face any additional inconvenience.
The Green Line is the first in Kolkata to implement the advanced CBTC signalling system, a key feature for enabling safe and automated train operations. The Line currently operates in two segments — between Salt Lake Sector V and Sealdah and from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade. Previously, a gap existed between Sealdah and Esplanade due to the Bowbazar crisis, but this was resolved by the end of 2024. Subsequently, the process of integrating the CBTC system for the entire East-West Corridor as a unified and complete entity, rather than as two separate corridors, began on January 12.
