malda: Music maestro Ajoy Chakrabarty on Sunday stated that music cannot be divided on the lines of religion in the context of using the titles of “Pundit” and “Ustad.” Further, he opined that such titles should not be given to anyone.

Ajoy Chakrabarty was in Malda on Sunday to perform in a classical music show at the Durgakinkar Sadan organized by Malda Shilpi Samsad. “Creating differences among artists with titles based on their religions, should be immediately stopped. There is no need to give such titles to any artist at all for all are devoted to music which offers no scope of differences among its followers.”

This iconic Eastern classical music singer stated that there is a need to bridge the gap between classical and contemporary music to endow the performers of each genre to try the other one. “This will benefit music. It was Late Lata Mangeshkar’s bengali song, ‘Na jeo na’ (music by Late Salil Chowdhury), which had ignited my love for music,” stated Chakrabarty. He strongly expressed his resentment against the practice of choosing winners of singing competitions through online voting. He wished that the government should take steps to stop such malpractices.

He also asked the financially sound people to adopt at least one child with singing capabilities for the sake of music. Such efforts will finally contribute to the expansion of Indian Classical Music. He advised all the singers to have faith and confidence

in themselves.
