Massive traffic snarls seen along EM Bypass

Kolkata: Massive traffic snarls occurred on Saturday and Sunday along the Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass due to a huge gathering at the Sreebhumi Durga Puja. Till last reports came in, the long queue had reached near Kadapara on EM Bypass.

According to sources, the Durga Puja of Sreebhumi Sporting Club was opened for common people from Saturday around 9 pm but people started gathering in the afternoon.

Though Bidhannagar City Police made elaborate arrangements for Sreebhumi but it did not work for the first two days. Due to slow movement of vehicles along the VIP Road, traffic congestion started in the afternoon and it became unbearable in the evening when the movement of vehicles nearly stopped on VIP Road.

Though cops are trying to increase vehicular movement on VIP Road, it is becoming a nightmare for them. “The Puja holidays have not even started properly and this kind of a situation has cropped up. What will happen from Saptami to Dashami,” said a bus driver.

Sources informed that on Saturday and Sunday, Kolkata Traffic Police through its control room, were frequently in touch with the Bidhannagar City Police and requested to take necessary steps to bring down the traffic congestion as much as possible.

It may be mentioned that two years back, visiting Sreebhumi Puja pandal had to be stopped after a stampede-like situation cropped up.
