Man assaulted to death in Dhakuria

A man was assaulted to death in Dhakuria by a staff of a wine shop after an altercation broke out between them. Police have arrested the accused and are grilling him to find out why the altercation had broken out.

According to sources, on Sunday afternoon, the deceased, identified as Sushanta Mondal (47), a resident of Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas, who stayed at his in-law’s house went to a wine shop beside Dhakuria bridge. It is alleged that while buying liquor Mondal fell short of Rs 5 and over this, an altercation took place.

Suddenly, the wine shop staff dealing with Mondal came out and started assaulting him with fists and blows. Mondal fell on the ground unconscious within a few minutes. He was rushed to a private hospital nearby where Mondal was declared brought dead.

After the incident, agitated local people vandalised the wine shop and put up a blockade.

Meanwhile, police arrested the two accused wine shop staff identified as Prabhat Dutta alias Tinku and Prasenjit Baidya from the wine shop. After cops assured the agitated people about taking stringent action against the accused persons, the blockade was withdrawn.

Later, police arrested two more persons identified as Debojyoti Saha and Amit Kar. Among them, Saha is the owner of the wine shop.
