KMC to stall Tala water supply on Dec 16 for repair

Kolkata: To carry out repair works, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has announced that water supply from Tala pumping station will be temporarily shut next week on Monday while services will be restored on Tuesday.

It was learnt that according to a notice by the civic body, repair works will be taken up at both Tala and Palta pumping stations on December 16. Services will be stopped at 9 am on Monday and will resume at 6 am on December 17, the following day.

The works will include installation of various components including valve and pumping motor while leakages will also be plugged. Sources said the disruption of service can affect several wards in North Kolkata.

Among all the 16 boroughs of the civic body, the first seven boroughs get water supply from the Tala bank. A part of borough 18 is also likely to get affected.

Mayor Firhad Hakim said the decision to carry out the repair works now was taken keeping in mind that water consumption is comparatively less than summer.

Hence, the demand for water supply is also less. Earlier, the Mayor had reportedly said the supply would be shut on December 14 evening but now the dates have been apparently deferred.

Last year, the civic body completed restoration of the Tala Tank that came up ten decades back.

The tank was restored with funds from both the state and the Centre. The state is said to have borne the majority share while the Centre disbursed funds from Atal Mission for Rejuvenation & Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme.
