Kaliyaganj BJP leader urges Rly to ensure fair compensation for acquiring farmers’ land

Raiganj: Pradip Sarkar, BJP leader and Secretary of the Kaliyaganj Nagarik Adhikar Rakkha Committee of North Dinajpur district, along with local farmers has urged the Railways authorities to ensure fair compensation and the current market price for land before proceeding with the acquisition for the proposed railway track between Kaliyaganj in North Dinajpur and Buniadpur in South Dinajpur.

Sarkar warned of stern protests if these demands are not met. The 33.13-kilometre-long railway track project, approved in 2010 by then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, has faced delays due to land acquisition challenges.

Although the process began in 2011, resistance from farmers led to a prolonged suspension of the project. Recently, the Railway Board decided to restart construction, rekindling concerns among local farmers.

The proposed railway track, once completed, is expected to enhance connectivity in the region, but its progress depends on resolving land-related disputes amicably.

Sarkar highlighted past grievances, stating: “In 2011, the Railway authorities initiated land acquisition without consulting farmers. We demanded fair compensation and market-value payments, but the project stalled due to the authorities’ lack of cooperation. Now, with the resumption of this project, 629 acres of land in Kaliyaganj are required. We insist on proper compensation to ensure farmers can sustain their families.”

Farmers have also emphasised the need for accurate land records to prevent disputes. Naresh Malakar, a farmer, remarked: “Many farmers lack proper land records. The Railway authorities must collaborate with the Block Land and Land Reforms office to update records before beginning acquisition.”

The farmers have expressed willingness to provide land for the project, provided their demands are met. However, the community warns that failure to address these issues will lead to widespread protests, potentially delaying the project further. Authorities are yet to respond to these concerns.
