JU instructs immediate reporting of loose chunks in old buildings
Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU) authorities have issued instructions for the immediate reporting of any loose chunks, flakes, or cracks noticed on overhead ceiling areas in old buildings to prevent accidents. This directive comes in light of concerns about delays in reporting incidents of falling chunks or flakes from overhead ceiling areas in old buildings.
The university has instructed all departments, sections, units, schools and centres, including those on the Salt Lake Campus, to report any incidents of falling chunks or flakes promptly to the Civil Maintenance Section of the university engineer’s office. If anybody notices such incidents, they have been asked to call or send a message, mentioning the location, to 9046069970.
“Delays in reporting such incidents may cause injuries. We want to ensure that any risky portions are removed as soon as possible to avoid accidents,” said an official.
The university’s acting registrar has also issued a circular mandating the removal of false ceilings in old buildings. No new false ceilings should be installed and efforts should be made to remove existing ones to address issues like seepage on the top floors, which are common in the university’s older buildings. Additionally, JU has directed that all rooftops be cleared of junk materials, with an emphasis on removing unused furniture or lab equipment to ensure clear passage for rainwater and the longevity of the roofs.
