Kolkata: Residents of Kolkata and other parts of South Bengal are set to experience a sharp rise in temperature over the next few days, with the mercury expected to climb by as much as 5-7 degrees Celsius, according to forecasts by the India Meteorological Department.

After a brief spell of relatively moderate weather, conditions are turning dry and hot once again. Meteorologists have attributed this sudden spike to the absence of significant rainfall activity and the dominance of dry westerly winds across the region. As a result, daytime temperatures are likely to soar, with several districts potentially touching or crossing the 38-40°C mark.

The discomfort is expected to intensify due to rising humidity levels, particularly in coastal and adjoining districts. Night temperatures are also predicted to increase gradually, offering little relief from the daytime heat.

Weather officials have warned that the prevailing conditions may lead to heatwave-like situations in some areas if the temperature continues to rise steadily. People, especially children, the elderly and those with health conditions, have been advised to take precautions, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours.

While there is currently no strong indication of immediate rainfall, isolated changes in weather patterns could occur later.

Until then, Bengal is bracing for a return of intense summer heat, marking a challenging period ahead for residents across the state.
