Fast-track immigration service starts at Kolkata airport

Kolkata: A fast-track immigration service for reducing wait time at immigration was launched at Kolkata and six other international airports in the country.

Recently, Home minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated the ‘Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Program’ (FTI-TTP) at Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin and Ahmedabad airports.

The service aims to streamline and expedite immigration clearance for pre-approved flyers. Travellers opting for it will get dedicated fast lanes at immigration checkpoints, significantly reducing wait time once they undergo a background check by submitting biometric data and completing an application process on ftittp.mha.gov.in. The system is to an extent akin to the Digi Yatra facility for domestic travel.

The FTI-TTP registration is valid for five years or until the passport’s validity, whichever is earlier. Upon application approval, a flyer will receive a notification to schedule a biometric enrolment appointment and can visit Kolkata airport or the nearest FRRO office for biometric enrolment. Once the biometric data is successfully captured, the passenger will be officially registered under the programme. An airport official said the entire registration process is free of charge and designed to provide improved security.

At Kolkata airport, there are eight e-gates: four for arrival and the rest for departure. To enter the e-gate, one has to scan the boarding pass and passport. After validation, the first flap gate of the e-gate will open. Then, place any finger on the fingerprint reader and follow the instructions to take a photo. Once verified, the second flap gate will open, indicating immigration approval.

It was learnt that applicants need to ensure their passport is valid for at least six months at the time of applying for FTI-TTP. A passport size photo is required to be uploaded along with a copy of the passport.
