EC cracks down on security cover of ‘tainted leaders’

Kolkata: The Election Commission of India has directed the withdrawal of security cover provided to political leaders in West Bengal who are facing criminal charges, as part of its effort to ensure a level playing field ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

The order applies to those accused in serious cases, including individuals out on bail or parole, with the poll panel stressing that state resources must not be misused during the election period.

In a follow-up move, the Commission has sought a detailed status report from the state police on the implementation of its directive. It has asked whether security cover has been withdrawn in accordance with its instructions and within the stipulated timeline, indicating close monitoring of compliance on the ground.

According to Commission sources, even before the announcement of polls, as many as 2,185 police personnel were deployed to provide security to 832 TMC leaders and workers, along with another 144 individuals, including party supporters. The Commission has raised questions over why such extensive security was required primarily for members of the ruling party. It has instructed the Director General of Police to take strict action within 2-3 days.
