Drunk car driver manhandles traffic cop

Kolkata: A traffic cop was allegedly manhandled by a drunk car driver on Central Avenue near Beadon Street crossing on Tuesday morning.

According to sources, a traffic sergeant of Jorabagan traffic guard intercepted a car, which was being driven in a rash and negligent manner, at around 8 am along Central Avenue near the Beadon Street crossing.

It is alleged that when the driver was asked to get out of the car, he started hurling offensive remarks at the traffic cop. When he was cautioned, the driver allegedly pushed the cop. Immediately, other traffic cops present there detained the accused. On suspicion, when a breath analyser test was conducted, the driver was found drunk. Later, the driver was handed over to the cops of Girish Park Police Station for further course of action and the car was seized. A case has been registered against the driver for allegedly trying to deter a public servant from discharging his duties.

Sources said that despite the Kolkata Police continuing naka checking to stop drunk driving, a section of people in some pockets did not seem to pay heed to the directions mentioned in the law. “Drunken drivers are not only a threat to themselves but also, driving in intoxicated conditions may lead to fatal accidents involving innocent people on the roads. Also, it is very challenging for us also to intercept drunken drivers,” said a traffic cop.
