Siliguri: The University of North Bengal (NBU) is gearing up to host its first-ever carnival on December 18, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s efforts to promote entrepreneurship, heritage and community engagement.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Centre of Floriculture and Agri-Business Management (COFAM) and supported logistically by the Border Security Force (BSF), promises to benefit not only students but also local farmers and artisans involved in handcrafted goods. The carnival aims to provide a platform for showcasing the rich cultural and agricultural heritage of North Bengal while fostering entrepreneurship among students. “We are organising such an event for the first time in the university. The aim of this carnival is to develop the entrepreneurship of students and provide a platform for farmers and people involved in handcrafted items. We are hopeful that everyone will benefit from this initiative,” said Nupur Das, Registrar of NBU.

The carnival will feature 25 stalls, with 10 reserved for students and the remaining dedicated to farmers and artisans. The participants will display and sell a variety of products, including handicrafts, food items and ethnic clothing.

Artists and farmers from neighbouring countries such as Bhutan and Nepal will also participate in the event.

Highlighting the cultural significance, Palash Pal, Development Officer of NBU said: “This event is a unique opportunity to showcase the heritage and culture of North Bengal. Cultural programmes like folk dance and songs will also be staged there.”

The carnival also aims to advance the agri start-up ecosystem in the region. Amarendra Pandey, representing the COFAM department said: “Efforts are being made to take the agri start-up ecosystem forward. Such events play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.”

The entire event will be plastic-free. No banners or posters will be used in the daylong event. The carnival will continue from 11 am to 4 pm.
