Cops intensify crackdown on drunk driving in Raiganj
Raiganj: To curb road accidents, especially during the foggy winters, Raiganj Police officials have launched an extensive campaign against intoxicated drivers.
A drive was conducted on Tuesday night along the Kaliyaganj-Balurghat State Highway near Kaliyaganj police station in North Dinajpur. During the drive, police intercepted numerous vehicles, including lorries, buses, cars and bikes. They used breath analysers to check for intoxication and fined the intoxicated drivers on the spot.
In addition to the crackdown on drunk driving, police are targeting reckless bike riders across Raiganj.
Commenting on the initiative, Pradip Mahato, a local car driver, expressed his gratitude towards the police, emphasising that most accidents occur due to intoxicated drivers. “Awareness among drivers is lacking. Many lives are lost because of this. If the police continue this drive for a longer period, road accidents will significantly reduce,” he said.
Kuntal Bandopadhyay, Raiganj’s Additional Superintendent of Police, highlighted the urgency of the initiative. He explained: “Many road accidents are caused by intoxicated drivers. During winter evenings, heavy fog makes roads almost invisible, increasing risks. As a road safety measure, we are conducting raids against drunk driving and reckless bike riding.” “In recent days, 350 bike riders have been fined during the safety campaign. Such drives will continue across different areas of all police stations under Raiganj Police District in the coming days to ensure safer roads for all,” he added.
