Child rights’ body questions absence of CCTVs on JU campus, meets parents of the deceased student

Kolkata: The entire Jadavpur University campus is under our scanner, said Ananya Chakraborti Chatterjee, Advisor of West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR), after meeting the parents of the deceased undergraduate student on Sunday.

Chatterjee also questioned the absence of CCTVs on the campus. She said had there been CCTVs it would have come to light who was entering or leaving the building.

A team of the WBCPCR visited the home of the deceased student, Swapnodeep Kundu, on Sunday. The team was led by Chatterjee who is the advisor to the Commission. Later, on the same day, the Commission went to Jadavpur University.

She pointed out that the entire university is under the Commission’s scanner. “Everyone is answerable in that university,” she said, adding that even those who protested against the installation of CCTVs are also responsible.

According to university sources, the University Grant Commission (UGC) is going to visit the Jadavpur University campus on Wednesday in connection with the death of the first-year undergraduate student. The UGC has also sought a preliminary report.

Meanwhile, the investigation committee of the university is scheduled to hold a meeting on Monday.

Kundu, a resident of Bagula in Nadia district, fell from the second-floor balcony of the main hostel building around 11.45 pm on Wednesday and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital at 3.40 am on Thursday, according to police. Three people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in ragging Kundu.
