Kolkata: A woman employee of a nationalised bank and her brother were arrested by the Detective Department of the Kolkata Police for alleged misappropriation of valuables worth about Rs 1.25 crore of a customer from the bank’s locker.

According to police, on December 12, 2024, one Shashi Pasari lodged a complaint at the Park Street Police Station claiming that his valuable gold and diamond jewellery which was worth more than Rs 1 crore was stolen by someone who might be a bank employee. After registering a case, police initiated a probe.

The bank fraud section of the Kolkata Police took charge of the investigation and got in touch with the nationalised bank located in the Park Street area. During the investigation, cops interrogated several bank employees and zeroed in on a woman identified as Moumita Si. While checking the bank details of Moumita and her brother Mithun, suspicious transactions involving a huge amount of money were detected. The transactions include cash deposits, purchase of gold and one luxurious car along with others valuable articles and electronic gadgets.

After several days of scanning the duo, cops on Friday arrested Moumita and Mithun from their residence at 19A, Jagannath Ghosh Road in Kasba. Cops also came to know that Moumita owns a flat in the Lake Town area. During a search of the Kasba house and Lake Town flat, police recovered Rs 29.72 lakh cash, gold jewellery weighing about 748 gm worth around Rs 56.10 lakh, an SUV, two iPhones, four mobile phones, a laptop along with several bank and business documents.
