2 injured in clash between TMC and BJP supporters
Cooch Behar: A clash between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP supporters in Bhelakopa area of Mathabhanga I block, Cooch Behar district, has left two persons injured. Among those wounded are a TMC and a BJP worker, both currently receiving medical treatment at the local hospital.
TMC alleged that a group of their workers were engaged in conversation at a shop while returning home from market on Saturday night when they were suddenly attacked by BJP workers wielding sharp weapons.
Trinamool leader Dinesh Chandra Barman suffered severe injuries. He was initially rushed to Mathabhanga Sub-Division Hospital and later referred to Cooch Behar MJN Hospital.
However, denying all the allegations, the BJP claimed that one of their workers was assaulted. The injured BJP worker is currently being treated at Jalpaiguri Hospital, according to the BJP leadership.
Girindra Nath Barman, chairman of Trinamool Congress in Cooch Behar, said: “Since BJP’s victory in the Bhelakopa Gram Panchayat, there has been unrest in this region. Trinamool leader Jagadish Chandra Barman was returning home last night when a group, led by local BJP panchayat member Subal Chandra Barman, attacked our workers with weapons. This resulted in serious injuries to Jagadish. We urge the police administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and arrest the culprits.”
Hemanta Barman, district secretary of BJP Yuva Morcha, said: “BJP has consistently secured victories in this area since 2018, including the recent election. Trinamool initiated the attack on our Panchayat members. Currently, one of our workers, Subol Chandra Barman, is undergoing treatment at Jalpaiguri Hospital due to severe injuries. The allegations made by Trinamool are baseless.”
