1 dead, 100 ill after eating food at prog

KOLKATA: An eleven year old girl died and more than 100 people fell ill after eating food during a programme at Kultali in South 24-Parganas.

The incident took place on Friday and till Saturday several of them were hospitalised.

According to sources, a religious programme was organised at the Pakhiraloy village of Jalaberia area in Kultali on Friday. After the programme almost all the villagers ate food in a common place. After a few hours of the food consumption, several villagers fell ill. Later almost all the people started feeling unwell.

From Friday night till Saturday more than 100 people were taken to multiple hospitals in and around Kultali. Among them 35 persons have been admitted at the Joynagar-Kultali rural hospital while others were admitted in other hospitals. Among them a 11 year old girl died while he was being taken to hospital. Initially her family members consulted a local doctor who prescribed some medicine. But her condition deteriorated later.

As soon as the news reached the district administration, officials from the Health department went to the village and took stock of the situation.

It is suspected that the villagers fell ill due to accidental food poisoning. MLA, Kultali Ganesh Mondal also visited

the village.
