Bengal flood situation rendered beyond control: CM Mamata

Flood situation remained grim on Sunday with <g data-gr-id="23">death</g> toll nearing 50 while 2.14 lakh people have taken shelter in 1,537 relief camps in the 12 districts affected by the deluge.

The CM advised people in vulnerable areas to take shelter in relief camps to avoid “untoward incidents.” “In the last four years there has been no flood like this year’s. <g data-gr-id="21">Sofar</g> we have witnessed man-made floods and we have restricted them quite successfully. But the situation at present is rendered beyond control,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat <g data-gr-id="22">Nabanna</g> on Sunday.

“I know that it is difficult to stay out of <g data-gr-id="25"><g data-gr-id="27">home</g></g> but life is <g data-gr-id="26">priority</g>. So you must stay in relief camps for two, three days,” Banerjee said, advising people in vulnerable areas to take shelter at relief camps. 

 On Saturday, I had said that there was 61 per cent excess rainfall. On Sunday, it’s 70 per cent excess rainfall, she said. Holding the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) responsible for releasing excess water resulting in floods in the state, Banerjee said, “DVC is doing business...We love <g data-gr-id="24">them</g> but that does not mean they will submerge Bengal.”
