In the midst of the crisis over the opposition demand for resignation, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is looking forward to strengthen his defence with the arrival of the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in New Delhi on Tuesday evening. She will attend the second meeting of the coordination committee of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coordination committee. This is for the first time that Mamata will be attending the meet, which has been scheduled for Wednesday.
The Trinamool Congress supremo, who has so far avoided attending the UPA conclaves, agreed to come after the Congress sent the defence minister A K Antony as its emissary to invite her. This is being as an attempt by the Congress to mend fences with the Trinamool Congress, which the UPA realised had been a key ally during the presidential and vice-presidential polls, Antony was sent by the party high command to meet Banerjee in Kolkata on 18 August.
The sources added that Banerjee wants to play a constructive role for the UPA. She will stick to her stand of opposing foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail, forward trading and pension bills and also continue to criticise the government on corruption scams and inflation. At the same time, she will continue supporting the government without causing any embarrassment to it by pulling out.
