Because we won’t let her spirit die so easy

The last rites of the Delhi gang rape victim were performed at a crematorium in Dwarka early on Sunday shortly after her body was received by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The body was taken to the house where she lived and rituals were performed before it was taken to the crematorium at Dwarka, Sector 24.

The girl’s father lit the funeral pyre at around 7.30 am in the presence of her brothers and close relatives. The police allowed only 100 people to attend her funeral. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, minister of state for Home Affairs RPN Singh, West Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra and Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta were also present at the cremation ground from where the media was kept out. Heavy police and security personnel, including the BSF and Rapid Action Force personnel in riot gear, were deployed to prevent any unwanted incident.

The police had finalised the place of funeral and kept it a secret. It was only late on Saturday night when the police approached the officials of the crematorium for an early morning cremation. The cremation plans were kept closely guarded till the last moment as the police apprehended a large gathering may cause law and order problems. Authorities also wanted the last rites to be performed at 6.30 am, but their plan did not materialise as Hindu traditions do not allow cremation before sunrise.

Meanwhile, protests continued at Jantar Mantar on Sunday. It remained peaceful barring an incident in which activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed with police for leading a protest march to India Gate, which along with Raisina Hills, was out of bounds for the public.

Braving the chill, various groups assembled at the venue from early morning and they remained there till evening. No one is sure how long the protests will continue in the absence of any leadership. The groups are also  divided over the demands. While some are demanding capital punishment for rapists, some want castration and few others want speedy justice.

Many foreigners were also seen there. ‘It is a painful incident,’ said Gerardo Angiulli, a professional photographer from Argentina. ‘The outpouring of grief and sorrow has moved me. I hope the government would step in now and stop such incidents from happening in future,’ he said, as protestors raised slogans against the government for not doing enough.

Protesting against the sexual violence, Delhi University students, teachers, student outfits and several women organised a ‘Walk against Gender Violence’ from DU Vishwavidyalaya metro station at 5.00 pm.
