Beaten inside Lahore jail, Sarabjit battles for his life

Indian national Sarabjit Singh, currently on death row in a jail in Pakistan, was on Friday attacked by fellow prisoners in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail. According to reports, Singh was attacked by two or three prisoners when he was washing his clothes. He is reported to have received severe head injuries in the incident. Sources in the ministry of external affairs said Indian embassy in Pakistan have been asked to provide every possible help to him and monitor the situation.

In January this year, another Indian national, who was about to complete a five-year prison term for alleged espionage, Chamel Singh had died in Lahore following ‘merciless beating’ by Pakistani prison staff. Sarabjit was admitted to the state-run MA Jinnah Hospital for treatment where he still remains critical. Other reports claim that the attack occurred while Singh was being moved from one cell to another. Authorities had claimed to have tightened Sarabjit’s security after the recent execution in India of Afzal Guru, who was convicted in the 2001 terror attack on the Indian parliament.

Sarabjit was convicted for alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990. His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former President Pervez Musharraf. The outgoing Pakistan People’s Party-led government put off Sarabjit’s execution for an indefinite period in 2008.
