BCCI may to summon MS Dhoni

Top BCCI sources said the top brass wants to review the performance of the team after their ignominious tour of New Zealand where they lost both the Test and ODI series. It is learnt BCCI top brass ‘wants to review the team’s performance away from home and probably discuss with them ways to improve the its overseas record.’

The matter is also set to come up for discussion during the Board’s working committee meeting in Bhubaneswar on February 28. Dhoni and Fletcher have come under the scanner after India’s fourth consecutive series defeats abroad and have become subjects of intense criticism from former players as well as the media, with Sourav Ganguly going to the extent of terming the 32-year-old’s captaincy as ‘obnoxious’.

However, former cricketers like Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Syed Kirmani felt that the embattled skipper can be retained for some more time. The Dhoni-Fletcher combination started from India’s disastrous tour of England in 2011 when they were whitewashed 0-4. That was followed by another similar thrashing in a four-match series in Australia in 2011-12.

India’s overseas blues came back to haunt the team as they suffered series defeats in South Africa and New Zealand by 0-1 margins, prompting the cricket fraternity to criticise the skipper and coach. But it was also learnt that the board is likely to keep the faith on the duo for the time being.

Fletcher’s overseas record shows 10 defeats in 15 matches and the Zimbabwean’s contract ends in March end this year.

BCCI didn’t talk to Andy Flower: patel

Mumbai:
BCCI on Friday rubbished a report that it had held discussions with former England coach Andy Flower about taking over as the chief coach of India in place of incumbent Duncan Fletcher following the country’s dismal show in South Africa and New Zealand.

‘That’s rubbish. I am the secretary of the Board and no such discussions (with Flower) have taken place,’ BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said when asked for his reaction. The report in a national daily quoting a highly-placed source in the BCCI said an official had held a round of  talks with former Zimbabwe skipper Flower.

‘Nothing has been finalised as these are preliminary talks with the board likely to invite applications from suitable candidates for the post next month. Routine process would be followed before handing the responsibilities to the new coach. But so far, Flower has been contacted and let’s see who wins the race,’ the source had said, according to the report.

Patel said he would like to know which board official had said this to the newspaper. Patel, however, said the board would talk to captain MS Dhoni and Fletcher, in all probability after the ICC T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, over the recent poor display of the squad in South Africa and New Zealand where the team lost ODIs as well as Test rubbers.

Board in talks with other bodies on IPL

New Delhi:
With the government making it clear it will not be able to provide adequate security for IPL 7, BCCI has started talking to cricket boards of other countries for possible venues of the cash-rich tournament, tournament chairman Ranjib Biswal said on Thursday. ‘The (central) government had expressed its inability to provide adequate security for IPL 7 in view of the upcoming general elections. So we have started talking to different countries to hold the tournament,’ he said. Asked if South Africa is a likely venue, he said, ‘South Africa is a favoured venue to host the matches but we will have to decide.’ Home minister SK Shinde today said that the government would not be able to provide adequate security for IPL, likely to be held between April 9 and June 3, as its dates clash with general elections.

Biswal said in any case the IPL will have to get all government clearances before holding the tournament in another country. ‘There is not going to be any IPL without government clearance. We will get all the clearances before the tournament,’ he said.

On the question of IPL spot-fixing case pending at the Supreme Court, Biswal said, ‘The Supreme Court had given the green signal for the players’ auction. So we went ahead for IPL 7. The apex court will take a call on the (spot-fixing) case. ‘But I can tell you, IPL 7 will be grander, cleaner and controversy free,’ he said.
