Yu said the absence of any leader will be a loss, and it is not equivalent to say which economy benefits from the absence of any other APEC member. US President Barack Obama has cancelled his plan to attend the APEC summit in Bali because of the government shutdown impasse. Yu said the US economy offers great bearing on China and the global economy. ‘Chinese business community and their counterparts all hope that US can maintain a recovery momentum and contribute to the recovery of the world economy,’ Yu added.
Meanwhile, Obama, in a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) on Monday to spotlight the loss of government services because of the shutdown, urged Congress to reopen government and raise the debt limit immediately.
‘My very strong suspicion is there are enough votes there to pass legislation. Hold a vote. Call a vote right now. Let’s see what happens,’ he said. Fema had recalled employees who were idled in the shutdown to deal with Tropical Storm Karen but the storm has weakened and Obama said the agency would now send about 100 of them home.
Meanwhile, US Republican House speaker John Boehner said on Sunday the lower chamber would not pass bills to end government shutdown or raise debt limit until President Barack Obama chooses to negotiate. ‘[There are not the votes in the house to pass a clean continuing resolution,’ Xinhua reported Boehner as saying on ABC’s ‘This Week’ programme.
