Such candidates, during the ongoing campaigns, are not only facing apathy of the voters but also trying to combat sulking party workers who are quite reluctant to support their candidature. Local workers claim that there is huge resentment among the workers due to new entrants and unpopular candidates making the cut and this could prove to be a costly affair for the saffron party. Sources in the party have also shared the same view saying that the local leadership has been ignored and party hoppers have been given more space and prominence.
Aiming to make a mark in the Patel Nagar constituency, the party fielded Krishna Tirath the same day when she joined the BJP. She was given this constituency where Poornima Vidhyarthi was supposed to be the candidate and this resulted in growing anger amongst the party workers. Later, it was reported that a big section of the party workers distanced themselves from the campaign, denying to accept her candidature.
A similar situation has also been reported from Krishna Nagar where Kiran Bedi, the Chief Ministerial candidate of the BJP, is in the fray. Vinod Kimar Binny, party candidate from Patparganj, has also reportedly faced discontent of local workers who are skipping rallies to avoid share the stage with him. Reports of hostility of candidates from Jangpura, Burari, Ambedkar Nagar, Seemapuri, Malviya Nagar, New Delhi and several other seats have also come to light as workers are quite unhappy with the way things have taken shape.
However, the workers not just criticised the party’s decision but clearly stated that they would not help out the party’s choices in this regard. They revealed that the party cadres are highly disappointed and have decided to abstain from day to day campaign.
“Our candidate had given a tough fight in the last Assembly election and preparations were being made accordingly. But last time, announcements regarding tickets was very disappointing. We cannot accept Krishna as our leader as she has spent almost three decades in another party,” said a worker on condition of anonymity.
It would be important to recall that after such elaborate and high profile joining of heavyweights like Krishna Tirath, Vinod Kumar Binny, Maninder Singh Dhir, Kiran Bedi and several others, the BJP think-tank is aiming to clinch a few seats from their opponents. Declaring a series of masterstroke joinings, the party leadership had claimed to increase its base but the local leaders are quite unhappy with this.
A series of protests have taken place including the one at Delhi BJP’s headquarters and the rebels have threatened to support other parties publicly.
