Bank body asks staff to oppose licences for private corporates

All India Bank Employees Association on Sunday asked its members to fight against the government’s policy to issue bank licences to entities from the private sector.

Speaking at the two-day All India Andhra Bank Award Employees conference, All India Bank Employees Association Joint Secretary B S Rambabu said that those who had run up large dues earlier were now planning to seek licences to start their own banks.

He pointed out that the banking industry in the country was on sound footing even as the banking sector elsewhere in the world was facing financial crisis with about 385 big banks having collapsed.

He said that PSU banks were in profit but government’s ‘de-nationalisation’ policy would weaken them and called the bank employees ‘to save the banking sector by opposing government’s policy’.

About wage agreement for bank employees, he said,’ we are waiting for the wage agreements of other public sector undertakings. We’ll fight for a right share in the profits of the banks’.
