National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the central and Delhi government not to issue any more environment clearances to any project in the Najafgarh drain basin area.
The tribunal headed by Justice Swantantra Kumar directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Delhi government henceforth stop giving out environmental clearances to projects that are located in the environmentally sensitive area.
The court was hearing the matter on an application filed by environmentalist and advocate Gaurav Bansal. The petitioner has alleged that the government of National Capital Territory (NCT) had issued more than 74 environmental clearances for projects despite a 2010 memorandum of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests banning such projects. According to the petitioner, Najafgarh Drain Basin has been declared as a critically polluted industrial zone.
