Ban on Alphonso mango exports: Traders left in lurch

After the recent ban on export of Alphonso mangoes by European Union (EU), which came into effect on Thursday, the national capital was left unsure by the decision. Both wholesale and retail traders see no major change in the trend of prices or consumption levels.

'The price of Alphonso right now varies from Rs 200 to 500 per dozen, which was the same last week and last year. I am aware of the ban but prices are not likely to come down because the fruit will be transported across the country to other cities and the demand will remain high without any noted changes’, said Deepak, a retail trader in CR Park.

‘We sell these mangoes for Rs 500 to 600 per dozen. There are no marked changes in prices as of now.

‘However, my prediction says that prices will fall eventually if hoarding takes place due to the ban or if consumption decreases,’ said Ashraf, a wholesale dealer in Okhla Mandi.
