Bal Thackeray’s health keeps Mumbai on toes

India’s commercial capital Mumbai came to a standstill on Thursday as Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s health condition reportedly remained critical. At the time of going to press, however, news agencies reported Thackeray was gradually improving and responding to treatment.

Throughout the day though, tension prevailed. There were reports that all shootings in Goregaon Film City had stopped and some theatres had stopped movie screenings. Large parts of Mumbai and suburbs remained closed for businesses as news of Thackeray’s delicate health spread on Thursday morning. Shiv Sena bastions like Bandra, Dadar and other parts remained virtually deserted as people preferred to remain indoors and catch the latest on Thackeray’s health through the media.

The Home Ministry has provided additional security forces to Maharashtra to assist local administration in maintaining law and order. Paramilitary personnel have been provided following a request by the state government which has beefed up security after Shiv Sainiks damaged some media vehicles and equipment on Wednesday night, official sources said.

The Home Ministry is closely monitoring the law and order situation. Union home secretary R K Singh called up Maharashtra chief secretary Jayant Kumar Banthia and assured him of all Central assistance.

Large contingents of Mumbai police and Rapid Action Force have been stationed in Mumbai. The area where Thackeray’s residence is located, has been heavily barricaded.

Earlier in the day, other leaders, including Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, also Thackeray’s nephew, assured the people that his condition was ‘stabilising’.
