Bal Thackeray’s health holds PM’s UPA dinner at ransom

Ailing Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray may come to the rescue of the UPA government after all, as his health conditions might determine the dinner which PM Manmohan Singh will be holding on Friday evening.

If Thackeray sails through smoothly then the dinner would be held, but a lot of party leaders might go to visit him. But just in case his health deteriorates then there is a possibility that the dinner might not be held at all.

Getting ready for the opposition's attack Parliament, the PM will be hosting dinner for UPA leaders on Friday to startegise and discuss on various political issues especially FDI that are expected to come up during the winter session starting on 22 Nov.

Singh's dinner with UPA leaders soon after he had similar interactions with leaders of alliance partner like Samajwadi Party and BSP. He hosted dinner for SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh last week and followed it with lunch for BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday.

The PM is reaching out to allies and outside supporters, in an attempt to placate them and garner support when a if a no-confidence motion is passed in parliament over the FDI issue.

TMC has already threatened to do so and even the Left and the BJP have openly said they will support it if it is brought in Parliament.

As for the DMK's stand, Millennium Post reported on Thursday that the DMK would support the government on the FDI issue at the central level but when it comes to the state they would not support the issue.

The support of DMK, the second largest group in UPA with its 18 MPs in Lok Sabha, is crucial for the UPA in case of a voting on a motion.

At present, the government enjoys the support of about 265 MPs, including DMK, in a house of 545. With the support of SP (22) and BSP (21), the backing for the ruling coalition goes a little over 300, which is comfortable over the required 273 majority mark in Lok Sabha.
