More than 10 PCR calls, all reporting about suspicious and unclaimed bags at various places, created panic around the national capital on Monday. Delhi is on high alert since the Hyderabad twin blasts.
Through out the day, the Delhi police received calls at the police control rooms (PCR) informing them that suspicious bags have been found at various places. The first call, received at 2.30 pm, said an unclaimed bag has been found near the Research and Referral (Army) Hospital in Delhi’s cantonment area.
A person in a Corolla car told army men standing outside the hospital that two bikers threw a laptop bag inside his car. He threw it outside and made a PCR call. ‘The Army’s bomb disposal squad along with sniffer dogs reached the spot. While inspecting the bag, the possibility emerged that there could be explosives inside. The bag was destroyed with controlled explosion. Later, a team of the National Security Guards also reached the spot,’ said Anil Kumar Ojha, ACP (south-west).
Later, when a forensic team examined the bag, a brick, a soap and a wallet were recovered. An official, investigating the matter, said: ‘The dog couldn’t distinguish between soap and RDX.’
After the Delhi Cantt incident, all the Station Head Officers (SHOs) were told to be alert. ‘A person made a PCR call at 4.50 pm that an unclaimed bag had been found on a parked motorcycle at M Block market in GK-1. When cops reached the spot, the owner of the bike said the bag was his and allowed the police to check the contents,’ an official said.
Deevesh Srivastva, ACP (Central) said: ‘Two calls were received in central Delhi. One at 6.20 pm informing that a bag was lying near Daryaganj post office. Later a call came that an unclaimed bag has been kept on the stairs of Oriental Bank. When officials reached the spot, no suspicious items were found inside it.’ ‘A call was also made at around 4 pm that an unclaimed bag has been found in S-Block market in Mangolpuri area. After investigation, it was found it belongs to a person who forgot it in a hurry,’ said BS Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
