Bacchus lovers in Noida have whale on 31st, sales shoot

Despite the media going hammer and tongs over low key new year celebration in the city in view of the horrific Delhi gang rape case, it failed to put checks on the soaring spirits of residents in Noida, capital’s famous suburb. The gang rape victim had died in Singapore on 29 December, following which both political parties and social organisations canceled celebrations New Year eve celebrations two days later.

As per excise department reports of Noida and Greater Noida, the total sale of liquor in the area on 31 December rose around 5-10 per cent.

A total sale of 22,000 litre country liquor, 2,000 bottles of beer and 23,100 bottles of foreign liquor (IMFL) on the last day of 2012. Corresponding figures for the same on 31 December 2011 were: 20,000 litre country liquor, 18,000 bottles of beer and 22,000 bottles of IMFL. ‘Entire liquor sale, except country liquor and beer, is recorded under the head foreign liquor,’ said Kuldeep Yadav, excise inspector, Noida and Greater Noida.

The sale of liquor in the first 11 months of 2012 also increased in the area. As per the data, people consumed 47 lakh litre country liquor, 91 lakh bottles of beer, 40 lakh litre IMFL by December 2012. While the figures in the same period in 2011 were 38 lakh country liquor, 74 lakh bottles of beer and 39 lakh bottles of IMFL.

The amount of liquor consumed in Noida is actually much higher than reflected in the revenue records.

Liquor in Delhi sold at rates which are nearly 30 per cent less than Noida. ‘People bring liquor from Delhi which causes a loss of around 15-20 per cent in our revenue,’ said Yadav.
