Ayodhya, Faizabad turn into fortress; MP Yogi arrested

Despite turning twin temple cities of Ayodhya and Faizabad into a fortress, some Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists managed to sneak into Karsevakpuram in Ayodhya and took ‘Sankalp’ for construction of Ram Temple.

The Uttar Pradesh government had already banned the VHP-sponsored ‘Sankalp Diwas’ and had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent it. The entry of media was also prohibited in the Karsevakpuram, venue of Sankalp Sabha but the ‘Sankalp’ taking was heard on the loudspeakers.
‘There was no report of breach of peace from anywhere in Faizabad district and elsewhere in the state’, the IGP, law and order, RK Vishwakarma said. But he further added that a total of 1600 VHP and BJP men including BJP MP from Gorakhpur Yogi Aditya Nath were arrested from Gonda station.
The state government had also banned bulk SMSs from Faizabad. A special team of experts has been deployed to keep constant watch on social networking sites to check rumor mongers. The entry of four-wheelers into Faizabad was banned from Thursday evening and about two thousand security personnel  were deployed in and around Ayodhya.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP) KB Singh refused to comment on the issue, while the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Lucknow zone Subhash Chandra said the programme was banned but possibly some activists had reached there.

Purushottam Narayan Singh, the organisation secretary of VHP, administered the ‘Sankalp’ and was arrested immediately along with 60 activists. Some women were also among the arrested. The VHP functionaries were arrested from Digambar Akhara, which was the centre of activities during the Ayodhya movement in 1990s.

The state government machinery had already started arrests of the VHP workers from Thursday and hundreds of VHP activists and leaders had been detained so far. Among those arrested included at least 350 Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and VHP activists. More than 40 saffron leaders, including VHP’s Ram Vilas Vedanti, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das and Mahant Suresh Das and former BJP minister Lallu Singh have been placed under house arrest.

Principal secretary home Anil Gupta and DGP Deo Raj Nagar reached Ayodhya on Thursday.
