Attack on Advani: Jaya announces Rs 5 lakh cash reward for police

‘As a gesture of honouring their service as well as a token of gratitude from the people of Tamil Nadu, all the personnel from officer to constable grades in the operation would be given a cash reward of Rs five lakh each,’ Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

Inspector S Lakshmanan, who survived serious injuries during the operation would be awarded Rs 15 lakh, she said, adding his medical expenses at a hospital, where he is being treated, would also be borne by the state government.

Jayalalithaa also said all the 20 personnel from constable to Additional Superintendent of Police, involved in the operation, would be promoted to the next level.

She had formed the SID following the murder of Hindu leaders in Tamil Nadu.

‘Due to the selfless, sincere and alert service of police officers and constables, not only were the suspects in many cases arrested but also many untoward incidents which could have happened have been thwarted with this operation. The fact that the efficiency of Tamil Nadu Police is unparallelled has been proved again,’ she said.

In a major operation, the SID of Tamil Nadu Police had on 4 and 4 October arrested Panna Ismail and Bilal Malik, two key suspects in the 2011 Advani bomb and many other cases.

Inspector Lakshmanan suffered severe injuries in the 5 October operation, while accused Panna Ismail suffered bullet injuries.

The arrest of the three key suspects came days ahead of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Chennai on 18 October.
