At last, Congress leaders come out to defend law minister

Enveloped by allegations of siphoning 71.5 lakh rupees for his trust, law minister Salman Khurshid garnered the support of his party colleagues, who came out issuing statements in his defence, after instructions from the party top brass to do so.

Information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni said, ‘There is no question of isolation or not backing [Khurshid]. He explained everything at yesterdays press conference... I don’t think there is anything [more].’ She added, ‘There is no question of isolating him or not backing him... He is an important member of UPA-2. He has a reputation that he should be proud of and a legacy.’ On a similar note health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said, ‘There is no question of distancing. He [Khurshid] has made it clear that there is nothing wrong.’

While backing Khurshid, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said, ‘If such allegations are made against an innocent man then naturally he will get angry.’ On IAC activist Arvind Kejriwal, Singh said, ‘Kejriwal had come to me to recommend his name to be made part of the NAC, but Sonia Gandhi probably knew more about him, and she refused.’

Congress spokesperson said, ‘Now the UP government has instituted an inquiry.  The thing is that those who are facing the allegations, have themselves asked for a probe into the matter. This reflects their self-confidence on the matter.’
