The apex regulator of medical colleges has decided to ‘videograph’ the process of assessment for establishment of new medical colleges and renewal of permission for the academic session 2015-16.
In its executive committee meeting held in the month of October, the MCI has passed the new guidelines for assessing the colleges.
The regulator of medical colleges has directed all the medical colleges seeking renewal of MBBS course to keep the declaration forms ready in proper bags rather than cardboard boxes. Hailing the move, MCI president Jayshreeben Mehta told Millennium Post over phone that it’s an initiative to bring transparency in the whole system. ‘We are trying to make the process of assessment foolproof, so that no one can raise fingers at MCI. At what level, the council will succeed in it, is to be judged in times to come.’
Senior officials of health ministry, however, said, ‘It would be too early to comment anything on this move of the regulator. But, let’s hope for the best and if they manage to make the system crystal clear, it will be help medical education aspirants.’
It is pertinent to mention here that there has been precedent of MCI and health ministry being at loggerheads over assessment of medical colleges and admission process in the past, including the ongoing academic session. The regulator had disapproved about 46 private and a few government medical institutions in June after several deficiencies were recovered at the time of inspection by MCI team.
This step of MCI was flayed by union health minister Harsh Vardhan. The minister, who had earlier charged the regulatory body with corrupt practices, said it was an open secret for years that the MCI looked the other way as medical colleges rampantly flouted regulations.
