Assault on Africans: Three more arrested

Delhi Police arrested three more persons on Monday in connection with the cases of assault on African nationals in Rajpur Khurd area, Mehrauli last week. The three accused have been identified as Ranjit (25), Naveen (24) and Vikas (28).According to senior police officers of the South district, all the eight accused persons involved in the matter have been arrested.

Police had registered four separate cases of wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation in connection with the incidents but cops claimed they had no links with the other. According to the police, these incidents took place a week after a Congolese youth was murdered in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area. However, three of the two accused were arrested, and further investigations are still on.

Police had attributed that the two incidents were fallout of arguments over loud music and drinking in public, meanwhile, men and women from Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda and South Africa alleged that it was a racial attack.

Earlier this week, a group of African students in the city called off the demonstration to protest the string of assaults on some of the members of their community after the government assured them of better security. The students said that they had a meeting with officials of the Ministry of External Affairs where they were assured of safety. The government officials also requested them not to go ahead with their protest at Jantar Mantar.

Lately, near the place of alleged assaults, 51-year-old cab driver was allegedly thrashed and robbed of cash in the wee hours by a group of African nationals.
