BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Thursday alleged that illegal migrants living in Assam and other parts of the country are responsible for the attacks on people from the northeast and the recent violence at Mumbai's Azad Maidan. ‘The attacks in some parts of the country on people from the northeast is unfortunate... These are being perpetrated by illegal migrants living in the country.
There is a foreign hand in this. The Centre should deal firmly with such incidents,’ Gadkari said.
‘Assam is not religious or communal but that of the Indian versus the outsider. Anti-national people are involved in this violence. Similarly, in Mumbai the crowd had waved Pakistani flag and made provocative remarks. They also vandalised the martyrs' memorial,’ Gadkari said.
Gadkari said he has directed Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar as well as CMs of other BJP ruled states to ensure that no harm is done to people from the northeast residing in their states. He said Karnataka deputy chief minister R Ashok went to the Bangalore railway station and assured the northeast people that there was no cause for panic and urged them not to leave the state. ‘The political parties should not use this issue for vote bank politics,’ Gadkari added.
The violence against the people from the northeast and Assam would be discussed at a meeting of BJP chief ministers to be held on Saturday, Gadkari said. BJP also condemned the attack on media and the assault on women police personnel by the demonstrators at Azad Maidan.
FRESH VIOLENCE ERUPTS IN ASSAM, CURFEW IMPOSED
Fresh incidents of violence were reported in Assam's Kamrup rural area Thursday and authorities imposed curfew in Rangiya sub-division of the district to bring the situation under control, an official said.
The army has staged a flag march in Rangiya to restore confidence of the people in the area freshly hit by violent.
‘Curfew has been imposed in Rangiya sub-division of Kamrup district after unidentified people set ablaze many vehicles and a wooden bridge,’ Director General of Assam Police Jayanto N. Choudhury said.
‘The situation is totally under control,’ the police chief said.
Thursday's violence in Rangiya was retaliatory for the Wednesday night incident when a car was set ablaze at Gandhibari in Baska district and its driver, Sahidul Hussain, reportedly went missing. The car was returning from Baksa to Rangiya, he said.
Angry locals blocked NH-31 at Udiana Chowk within the Rangiya police station jurisdiction since early morning to protest Wednesday night's incident.
The mob went berserk torching seven vehicles, including a bus going to Guwahati at Bhatkuchi, and also burnt a wooden bridge at Kekahati, police said.
A vehicle of Rangiya sub-divisional officer Barnali Deka also came under attack but the officer was safe. ‘We have been forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowd,’ Choudhury said. Senior police officials have rushed to Rangiya to take stock of the situation.
AS ASSAM BURNS AND BENGALURU SIMMERS, MUMBAI LIMPS TO NORMALCY
Mumbai: The city presented a peaceful picture on Independence Day as it limped back to normalcy less than a week later after south Mumbai was rocked by violence following a protest meet that went awry, leaving several dead and many others injured.
A clear picture is yet to emerge, despite video footage of the protests on TV channels and CCTV cameras from various places in the city. The evidence is being probed in an attempt to ascertain the reasons behind the violence, which claimed the lives of two and left about 63 injured last Saturday.
The Mumbai police are leaving no stone unturned as they continue their investigations. They have also reached out to their informer network, besides appealing to the public to come forward with any information that would help them apprehend the rioters.
Police sources told Millennium Post on Thursday that investigations into Saturday’s violence were continuing and they were hopeful of nabbing the miscreants that had participated in the mob violence. The Saturday incident had left the city police with in an embarrassing situation when they found themselves unable to cope with the sudden violence that broke out following the speeches of several Muslim leaders, who were protesting at the Azad Maidan against the riots occurring in Assam.
The video footage showed that the policemen had suddenly found themselves deprived of their firearms in their face-off against a mob of irate agitators, who paraded around with the self-loading rifles and even fired shots in the air. Two SLRs, a service pistol and 150 rounds of ammunition were forcibly taken away from the policemen by the mob. The cops have managed to recover the two SLRs though the remaining weapons are still missing.
While about 23 persons have been nabbed by the cops for their role in the violence and booked on charges of murder, rioting, molestation, attempt to murder and the Arms Act, the police are also intensifying their search for the vandals who damaged the 1857 Martyrs Memorial near the Maidan.
ONE MORE ARRESTED FOR AZAD MAIDAN VIOLENCE
A man who snatched and fired a police gun during the violence at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan Saturday, which left two people dead and another 100 injured, was arrested Thursday after identification on the basis of CCTV footage, police said. ‘Salim Allarakha Choukiya alias Ali, 23, had snatched a rifle from a policeman during the riots. He has been arrested from the Anand Nagar area of Oshiwara (in northwest Mumbai),’ said Ravindra Patil, assistant police inspector from the Oshiwara Police Station. According to officials of the crime branch, a video footage from Azad Maidan showed Ali as firing a self-loading rifle (SLR) after snatching it from a
policeman.
