Assam Assembly to move privilege motion against attack on Speaker

The Assam Assembly on Tuesday decided to bring in a breach of privilege motion against those who had verbally attacked the Speaker for suspending 12 MLAs on the first day of the Winter Session.

Senior BJP leaders had targeted the Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi on Monday for acting under the influence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, when he took disciplinary action against five BJP and seven Congress MLAs, who had shown their allegiance to the opposition party but did not resign from their legislative memberships.

State Parliamentary Affairs minister Rockybul Hussain raised the issue just after conclusion of the Question Hour today and drew attention of the members to media reports quoting the BJP leaders.

"BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma has attacked the Speaker and dragged his son's ticket issue into it. He has charged that the CM has influenced the Speaker. This has hurt the dignity of the Speaker as well as the House. Sarma has also lowered the status of the House, which runs only as per law," Hussain said.

The House should clarify the matter and not accept any attack on it as the matter was of "serious concern", he added.

Supporting him, AIUDF MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed said attacking a dignified person like Pranab Gogoi was unfortunate.

"Under the rules, I am moving a Breach of Privilege motion against all those who have attacked you (Speaker) and the House," he said.
