In September, a woman trainee had alleged that Rana, along with international-level gymnast Chandan Pathak, had passed vulgar remarks on her during a training camp in Delhi. However, both the accused had left for the Asian Games at Incheon in South Korea before investigations could start.
While Rana was arrested on Tuesday, police haven’t been able to reach Chandan Pathak yet. ‘Pathak has also returned to India but went straight to his native village. All evidences collected so far indicates that he was involved in the act and will be arrested soon,’ said Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (central).
On 2 September, both Manoj Rana (coach) and Chandan Pathak (senior gymnast) had allegedly passed vulgar remarks on the inner-wear of a 28-year-old woman gymnast and made obscene gestures during a training camp at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi. They also allegedly threatened the victim of dire consequences if she reported the matter to anyone.
The victim reported the matter to the police on 16 September and by the time police could begin investigation, the accused had left for the Asian Games that ended on 4 October. An FIR was immediately registered at the IP Estate police station in central Delhi and both accused were booked under Section 509 (words, gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.
She also alleged that the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI), despite having received her complaint in two days after the incident took place, took no action against the accused. They rather allegedly asked her to settle the issue with an apology by the accused in presence of a committee formed by the body to look after the issue. ‘Her allegations on the role of GFI in the incident are a matter of further investigations,’ said a police official.
