As the archaeologists got on with their work on Friday, skeptics moved the Supreme Court urging its intervention to monitor the treasure hunt.
The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a public interest litigation seeking court monitoring of the digging activity being undertaken by the ASI for gold in Daundia Khera village in UP’s Unnao district. The petition filed by advocate M L Sharma has urged for court monitoring as he feared that ‘the valuable resources might vanish.’
BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, meanwhile, has mocked the whole exercise saying: ‘The government has started digging for some 1,000 tonnes gold after someone dreamt of it. You bring back the money that the looters have stashed away in Swiss banks. That would be more than the value of 1,000 tonnes of gold.’ Modi was addressing BJP workers in Chennai.
The exercise has been undertaken after a local Sadhu Swami Shobhan Sarkar said 1,000 tonnes of treasure lies hidden below the ruins of a 19th century fort of King Rao Ram Baksh Singh in village Daundia Khera in Unnao, 80 km south-west of Lucknow. The current value of that amount of gold would be Rs 3,00,000 crore.
Swami Shobhan Sarkar, in his 70s, claims that the king asked him in his dream to take control of the treasure trove. Swami Omji, a disciple of Shobhan Sarkar, told reporters people have found silver and gold coins in that area. ‘Locals know there is a treasure hidden somewhere here, but no one knows exactly where it is. After Raja Sahib told Swamiji about it we now know exactly where the treasure is,’ he said.
