Asaduddin Owaisi banned from entering Aurangabad

After spending three days in jail and forced to make couple of court appearances in Andhra Pradesh, MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has ran into more trouble, this time in Maharashtra, after the police banned his entry to Auranagabad, where he was address some public meetings.

The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party chief's entry to the city has been barred till 2 March as he may pose a threat to peace, Sanjay Kumar, police commissioner of Aurangabad, said on Wednesday.

Trouble for both Asaduddin and his younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi, an MIM legislator began after the junior Owaisi delivered hate speeches in Nirmal and Nizamabad last December forcing the police to arrest him.The police also arrested Asaduddin Owaisi in connection with an old 2005 case and he was subsequently released after spending three nights in jail.

The latest action of the Aurangabad police is a blow to Owaisi's hopes of making some gains in Maharashtra, where Majlis was planning to stir Muslim sentiments, some experts said.

The MIM has 11 corporators in Nanded municipal corporation and the party believes it can make rapid inroads into neighbouring areas of the western state. Owaisi was planning to address his supporters in Aurangabad on 1 February.

‘Hear me out. Have a debate with me. If I violate the law, then take action. I can go anywhere peacefully and be heard. Why is the government so afraid of us? They cannot stifle us. We will fight in the high court as we have full faith in the judiciary,’ Owaisi told the media at his residence in Himayatnagar. He was supposed to leave for Aurangabad on Thursday.
