The victim, identified as Nido Tania, is son of a Congress MLA Nido Pavitra, who is parliamentary secretary (health and family welfare) in Arunachal government. Tania was on Thursday declared brought dead to AIIMS. The accused have been identified as Farhan and Akram and detained by Delhi police. An FIR has been registered
in the case.
Nido Tania, a second year student in Jalandhar’s Lovely Professional University, came to Delhi for a 10-day vacation. On Wednesday, he, along with two of his friends, was travelling in an ambulance to visit a sick friend in the vicinity. They stopped at Shop No 83, Rajasthan Paneer Bhandar, in Lajpat Nagar Part-I, to ask for directions. The shopkeeper allegedly made fun of Tania’s hairstyle and called it a ‘bird nest’ and other workers at the shop began mocking him.
His friends, who were eyewitnesses, recorded their statement before DCP (south-east) P Karunakaran and told him that Tania asked the men to apologise but they continued passing racist comments. ‘Angry, Tania punched the glass top of the shop’s counter, injuring his hand. In retaliation, a group of six to seven men started beating him with stick and iron rods,’ Vinay, a family friend said.
A PCR call was made by one of the friends and cops took all of them to the police station. The family claimed that the police struck a compromise and Tania paid Rs 11,000 to the shopkeeper for breaking the glass counter, leaving thereafter. Tania along with his friend returned home on Wednesday evening. At around 2 pm, they found him lying unconscious. He was immediately rushed to AIIMS hospital where the doctors declared brought dead. His family was informed and a complaint was registered at Lajpat Nagar police station. Meanwhile, the Delhi government recommended to the L-G Najeeb Jung to order a magisterial inquiry. CM Arvind Kejriwal strongly condemned the gruesome and inhuman incident.
Also, the northeast community has decided to hold a protest march on Saturday in front of the same shop where Tania was beaten up. The home ministry has also sought a report on this.
